Women in agriculture: voices from the field

3 min read

Women play a vital role across agricultural value chains. From primary production to certification activities and research, their contributions help drive innovation, strengthen responsible practices, and expand access to markets.

Agraya is committed to supporting inclusive participation across agriculture and recognizes that diverse expertise and leadership help ensure that responsible farming solutions remain practical, relevant, and globally applicable. As part of its ongoing efforts to highlight these contributions, Agraya has produced several videos showcasing the experiences of women working in agriculture in Thailand, Costa Rica, and Argentina.

These stories come at a particularly relevant moment. The United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognizing the importance of women’s roles in strengthening food systems and communities worldwide. This theme also guides the Changemaker Awards 2026, which recognize initiatives designed to advance the vital role of women in agriculture and the efforts helping to overcome the barriers they encounter. Applications for the awards are open until 15 May.

From field experience to leadership in farming and certification

At Red Rocket Farm in Thailand, farm owner Sriwan Buaban reflects on how early exposure to farming shaped her career path as a producer. She highlights the importance of continuous learning, responsible production practices, environmental responsibility, and certification as a way to ensure safe food and build consumer confidence.

At Nico Verde S.A. in Costa Rica, Kimberly Ramírez Guerrero works in certification and laboratory science supporting pineapple exports to international markets. With a background in finance, she moved into agriculture through an interest in sustainability and innovation. Her role focuses on certification processes and developing plant-based solutions that contribute to circular production systems and added value within supply chains.

At INTA in ArgentinaLucía Mañueco, an agricultural engineer and researcher specializing in irrigation and water management, contributes technical expertise on efficient water use in production systems. Her work supports the transition toward watershed-based water management approaches and aligns with the water stewardship principles reflected in the GLOBALG.A.P. IFA v6 standard.

Together, these stories showcase how women contribute to innovation, certification implementation, environmental stewardship, and consumer confidence across different regions and roles.
