Taprobane Seafood, a leading aquaculture producer in Sri Lanka, has been certified to the GLOBALG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) standard for aquaculture. The certification, formally awarded at the World Aquaculture India 2025 event, marks Taprobane Seafood as the first company in Sri Lanka to achieve this milestone.
Enhancing farm management
Taprobane Seafood operates 16 processing facilities and employs more than 2,000 people across the North Western and Northern Provinces of Sri Lanka.
With a focus on farmed shrimp, the implementation of the IFA standard reinforces the company’s leading role as a responsible aquaculture producer in the country – supporting access to premium export markets that require verified production processes.
Dilan Fernando, Director of Taprobane Seafood, commented: “Sustainability is part of who we are. Achieving GLOBALG.A.P. certification marks an important milestone in our journey. As the first certified aquaculture company in Sri Lanka, we have validated our efforts through a globally recognized standard that supports transparency and responsible sourcing across the entire supply chain”.
Advancing responsible aquaculture practices
By following internationally recognized requirements, Taprobane Seafood aims to minimize environmental impact, maintain safe working conditions, and meet global animal health and welfare guidelines in its shrimp farming operations.
The IFA standard for aquaculture has consistently achieved recognition from the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) – the only standard with this recognition for the primary production of farmed seafood. It is also recognized by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) at farm level and aligned with the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) Aquatic Animal Health Code, with certified production processes in over 30 countries worldwide.
The certification strengthens Taprobane’s environmental governance and also aligns feed management practices with global best practices and standards – enhancing credibility among buyers seeking responsibly sourced seafood.
Fostering continuous improvement
Commenting on the certification, Balamurugan Sambasivan, Area Manager for India and Sri Lanka at certification body DNV, stated: “I congratulate Taprobane Seafood on achieving this certification. It reflects their commitment to continuous improvement in aquaculture practices and complements their broader initiatives, including renewable energy integration.”
With feed management as a key element of the IFA standard, the certification process prompted Taprobane Seafood to enhance its feed procurement systems, increasing supplier monitoring, data transparency, and traceability.
Dilan Fernando added: “We deeply value DNV’s role in helping us set new benchmarks for responsible shrimp farming in Asia. Their extensive experience in aquaculture certification, technical expertise, and the collaborative approach enabled us to complete the certification efficiently while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and transparency.”
With this certification, Taprobane Seafood sets a benchmark in Sri Lanka’s aquaculture industry and strengthens its position in international markets.
